Clusters of galaxies as a storage room for cosmic rays

چکیده
It is demonstrated that clusters of galaxies are able to keep cosmic rays for a time exceeding the age of the Universe. This phenomenon reveals itself by the production of the diffuse flux of high energy gamma and neutrino radiation due to the interaction of the cosmic rays with the intracluster gas. The produced flux is determined by the cosmological density of baryons, Ωb, if a large part of this density is provided by the intracluster gas. The signal from relic cosmic rays has to be compared with the flux produced by the late sources, which can be considered as a background in the search for cosmic ray production in the past. We calculate this flux considering the normal galaxies and AGN in the clusters as the sources of cosmic rays. Another potential cosmic ray source is the shock in the gas accreting to a cluster. We found that this background is relatively high: the diffuse fluxes produced by relic cosmic rays are of the same order of magnitude which can be expected from AGN in the clusters. In all cases the predicted diffuse gamma-ray flux is smaller than the observed one and the diffuse Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso Statale 17 bis 67010 Assergi (L’Aquila) ITALY Dipartimento di Fisica, Universitá degli Studi di L’Aquila Via Vetoio, 67100 Coppito (L’Aquila) ITALY Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Propagation of Radiowaves Troitsk, Moscow region 142092, Russia

Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation
Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...
متن کاملHigh Energy Neutrinos from Cosmic Ray Interactions in Clusters of Galaxies
The spatial clustering of galaxies in galaxy clusters implies that the background of infrared (IR) light in the intracluster medium (ICM) may exceed the universal background. Cosmic rays injected within the ICM propagate diffusively and at low enough energies are trapped there for cosmological times. The photopion production interactions of cosmic rays with the IR photons are responsible for th...
متن کاملCosmic Rays above the Second Knee from Clusters of Galaxies and Associated High-energy Neutrino Emission
Accretion and merger shocks in clusters of galaxies are potential accelerators of high-energy protons, which can give rise to high-energy neutrinos through pp interactions with the intracluster gas. We discuss the possibility that protons from cluster shocks make a significant contribution to the observed cosmic rays in the energy range between the second knee at ∼ 10 eV and the ankle at ∼ 10 e...
متن کاملPropagation of Ultrahigh Energy Nuclei in Clusters of Galaxies: Resulting Composition and Secondary Emissions
We study the survival of ultrahigh energy nuclei injected in clusters of galaxies, as well as their secondary neutrino and photon emissions, using a complete numerical propagation method and a realistic modeling of the magnetic, baryonic and photonic backgrounds. It is found that the survival of heavy nuclei highly depends on the injection position and on the profile of the magnetic field. Taki...
متن کاملExtreme Ultraviolet Emission from Clusters of Galaxies: Inverse Compton Radiation from a Relic Population of Cosmic Ray Electrons?
We suggest that the luminous extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission which has been detected recently from clusters of galaxies is Inverse Compton (IC) scattering of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation by low energy cosmic ray electrons in the intracluster medium. The cosmic ray electrons would have Lorentz factors of γ ∼ 300, and would lose energy primarily by emitting EUV radiation. These ...
